First express entry draw of 2024
On the first Express Entry draw of 2024, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invited 1510 candidates through a general draw, with a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score requirement of 546. This draw included all Express Entry candidates from the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).
December 2023 witnessed seven Express Entry draws, which is the highest number of draws conducted in a single month throughout the year. The most recent four draws took place between December 18-21. On December 18, a general draw was held, which invited 1,325 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 524.
The remaining three draws were conducted for candidates who met the criteria for category-based selection in one of six possible categories. On December 19, a category-based draw for trades occupations invited 1,000 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 425.
On December 20, a category-based draw for transport occupations invited 670 candidates, and the minimum CRS score requirement for this draw was 435. On December 21, 400 candidates in agriculture and agri-food occupations received ITAs, and a minimum CRS score of 386 was required.
Additionally, there were three draws held between December 6-8. The December 6 draw was a general draw, the December 7 draw invited candidates who were eligible under the category for French-language proficiency, and the December 8 draw invited candidates in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) occupations.
The six-week pause that lasted from October 26 until the December 6 draw was broken by the December 6 draw. The IRCC did not confirm a reason for the pause.
What to expect in express entry draw of 2024?
The Canadian government has released its Immigration Levels Plan for the years 2024 to 2026. According to the plan, Canada is set to welcome 110,000 new permanent residents through Express Entry in 2024. This is a significant increase from the 82,880 Express Entry candidates that the IRCC had aimed to target in 2023. However, it is important to note that not all the candidates invited in 2024 will be admitted before the year ends.
Some of them, especially those invited later in the year, will arrive in 2025. This is because the IRCC has a standard of six months to issue a final decision on Express Entry applications for permanent residency. In 2023, the IRCC issued over 100,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Express Entry candidates.
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry (EE) is an online system designed for individuals who want to apply for immigration to Canada as skilled workers. The system allows candidates to submit their profiles for consideration. Candidates’ profiles are ranked based on a specific set of criteria, and those with the highest scores are subsequently invited to apply for permanent residency.
The Canadian Government introduced the Express Entry Program in 2015 to address the skilled labor shortage in the country. The previous immigration system in Canada was slow and had a large backlog. The new system was designed to facilitate the immigration of skilled professionals more quickly. Since its introduction, the Express Entry system has become the most popular immigration system globally.
Category-Based Express Entry Draw
Sean Fraser, former Immigration Minister of Canada, announced the launch of a new category-based express entry draw. This draw aims to attract a larger number of highly skilled professionals specialized in specific industries that are in high demand within Canada. These categories include healthcare, science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), trade, transport, agriculture and agri-food, as well as French-language proficiency. It is important to note that the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) review these categories annually and may revise them in the following years.
